At Ease With Coleman Hawkins

Coleman Hawkins is cool.

Coleman Hawkins is Gangsta.

This is the man who made 1) the saxophone more than a circus instrument; and 2) made Sonny Rollins want to play it.

He has dozens of dozens of albums. At Ease With… is not revolutionary. It’s not that different from The Hawk Relaxes, or any number of LPs released in his name that feature mostly ballads.

It’s a standby. It’s warm wool socks with holes in them that are too comfortable to throw out.

It’s still worth listening to, worth hearing, Clyde.

All the tracks are equal. They serve the same purpose. If you wanna cherry-pick tracks, get “Poor Butterfly.”

The Hawk would appreciate it.
