Harry “Sweets” Edison– Sweets

Edison never had, perhaps obviously, the influence or vision Miles Davis had, or the discernible pain and obvious audible signature Chet Baker did.

But you should listen.

You should listen because Sweets is that friend you’ve always had, that friend that never got in the limelight, that never yelled, that never made a scene– but that, maybe much later, you realized was always the one talking sense.

The one who’s words still stay with you. Even when you can’t remember their face.

Sonically– Sweets is Baker on antidepressants. Fragile like Miles, without the ostentatiousness. (Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about: Miles is the gorgeous prom queen that was ultra-high maintenance, treated you like shit, but was so fucking hot you put up with it. Sweets is her best friend. Beautiful, though not perhaps as aggressively, and relatively low maintenance.)

First piece, “Walkin’ with Sweets” features all the characteristics mentioned above, and also has Ben Webster solo at around three minutes. “Willow Weep For Me” and “How Deep Is the Ocean” are my favorites, but they’re all equivocally worth hearing.
